Background Information
Ever since little (or as long as he could remember) Kouji had always lived surrounded by comforts and facilities, after all (raised as an only son) his father had gave him all he wanted.
He lives with his father and step mother, and grew up believing his real mother was dead, but he certainly didn’t know much about his mother (and his father always tried to not to mention her).
He didn’t have a good relationship with his family ever since his father remarried when he was 6, mostly for the fact that his father wanted him to completely forget about his real mother and start seeing his step mother as her (for which he totally refused to), which annoyed him (though in the end he started calling her ‘mother’).
Kouji developed a really lonely and aloof personality for the fact that his family moved a lot due his father job (for what he never got to make friends in school), but he won’t doubt in help anyone in danger (even if it’s endangering his own life), though he doesn’t like when people thank him (it makes him feel embarrassed), and also used to be easily irritated from people.

However when he was eleven years old he was -abducted- to ‘The Digital World’, where he learned how to be a bit more sociable with people and express his feelings in a better way (still keeping some tints of his previous personality nonetheless).
Also, he met his twin brother in his visit to the digital world, Kouichi, and discovered that his real mother was not death.

After that, he keep visiting his mother as much as he could and got somewhat pretty attached to Kouichi, becoming best friends in almost no time (also, Kouji developed a slight fear after the experience of almost losing him, but he wouldn’t tell this at all).
